How much salt do you eat?

On the today show this morning they were talking about the average daily intake of salt in the US.  They said the maximum suggested amount is 2000mg (or something like that) and the average for the US is 4000mg.  I don’t know if that is the right amounts, but the average was exactly 2 times the recommended amount.

This high salt diet supposedly leads to 100,000 death each year due to several different conditions that are brought on by high salt diet.

This kinda made me wonder exactly how much salt I eat in a day.  I would think I probably eat much less than what is recommended, but I really have no idea how much salt is in some of the crap I eat.  I’m gonna try to add up the amount I eat today.  I’ll probably forget about it by 2nd meal and then try to do it another day.

How much salt do you take in a single day?

Wow, i probably do go way over the top.

1st meal = hot chocolate and crunchy peanut butter clif bar

    hot chocolate = 170mg/packet X 2 packets = 340mg
    clif bar = 250mg

total = 590mg of salt just for 1st meal. shit - i could be in trouble.

The clif bar says 250mg is 10% of daily dose - meaning they think 2500mg is the right amount. I’m pretty sure the today show said 2000mg.

You may or may not know this, and since I tend to be a master of the obvious I will make this statement.

Daily values (allowances) are based on your activity level. If you have a higher activity level you are “allowed” more calories or grams of a particular mineral, fat, etc. per day.

2,000 mg per day is for the average American’s activity level(or what was the average American’s activity level).

hmmmm, yes well I’m probably way more active than the average - even though I don’t consider myself to be real active.
