Red lights should be treated like stop signs

When I started riding my bicycle for transportation I used to be strict about following all road laws. I’ve slowly relaxed on that. Now pretty much everything is a yield. I am pretty sure that I can roll up to a red light and look to see if anyone is coming. If I treat a red light like a stop sign am I being unsafe?

Now that I’ve been biking so much this summer it seems weird to sit in my car at a red light when there is no one in sight. Why the hell should a random light determine when it is safe for me to cross an intersection?

Imagine this – you sit at a red light when no one is in sight. Then when it turns green you go through without a worry about whether other cars are going to stop because of the color of a light they see.

I guess what I really want to know is: Aren’t you capable of determining when it is safe to proceed?
